Together 2030 joined forces with Sightsavers and CONGAD/Senegal (Conseil des Organisations Non Gouvernementales d’Appui au Développement) in the organization of a workshop to discuss opportunities and processes related to the preparation of the voluntary national review (VNR) to be presented by the Senegalese Government at the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July 2018.

Held in Dakar, Senegal, on September 29, the workshop mobilized around 30 participants, including representatives from several governmental bodies including the planning and economic policy director, the national statistical agency, the ministry of sustainable development and environment as well as members of the disabled people’s organizations (DPOs) federation, UNDP, CONGAD members and other non-governmental organizations, and representatives of the media.

Andrew Griffiths, Co-Chair of Together 2030 and Head of Advocacy of Sightsavers and Naiara Costa, from the International Secretariat of Together 2030, shared information about the global follow up and review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The workshop included presentations from government representatives focusing on the alignment with public policy, national targets and the internal review process and an overview of the work lead by Sightsavers Senegal and CONGAD in promoting SDGs in country.

At the meeting, government officials reinforced their commitment to consult with civil society in the process leading up to the preparation of the VNR report. Additionally, national TV networks attended the workshop and the outcomes of the discussions featured at national news in Senegal (Available Here and Here).

The workshop followed a meeting held between the General Director of Planning and economic policies with CONGAD, Sightsavers and Together 2030, where an inclusive process for the development of the VNR was discussed.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Conference discuss the SDGs

Together 2030 and Sightsavers partnered in leading a workshop on the SDGs at the NTD NGO Network (NNN) Conference, held in Senegal, in September 28. The focus of the workshop was on introducing key elements of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, including main principles like ‘leaving no one behind’, ‘reaching the furthest behind first’, ‘indivisibility’ and ‘interlinked’ nature of the Goals. The workshop also promoted discussions around how to better integrate the priorities and advocacy messages from the NTD community into the global SDG follow up.
